AWMA (Victoria) State Conference 2013

Postcard

March 2013

Vic 2013In February 2012, Andrea Minnis submitted a bid for Bendigo to host the Australian Wound Management Association (VIC) Inc State Conference on behalf of Bendigo Health. The AWMA (VIC) Committee teamed up with a Committee from Bendigo Health to present an extremely successful and exciting Conference in Bendigo held at the All Seasons, Bendigo, on 22-23 March, 2013, focusing on our theme ‘Wounds in our World’.

International speakers Professor Terrence Ryan, world leader in dermatology, Dr Zena Moore, Nurse Academic, Practising Clinician and Researcher and Pip Rutherford, New Zealand Nurse Practitioner joined national and local speakers to discuss not only the wounds we see across the world, but the cultural issues we need to consider when planning care and the knowledge and experience that our cultural backgrounds as health professionals bring to wound care.

Vic 2013The Conference was officially opened by Mr David Rosaia, Director of Nursing, Surgical Services, Bendigo Health following a welcome to country by the Aunty Lola from the Dja Dja Wurrung Association. The first day of the Conference provided delegates with a snapshot of wound, burns and lymphoedema management across Africa and the South Pacific. Presentations were provided by international speakers as well as those closer to home including Mr Ian Carlisle, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon, Cabrini Melbourne, Hana Menezes, Burns Liaison nurse, Alfred Hospital, Jennifer Byrne, Nurse Practitioner, Royal Darwin Hospital and Jaklina Michael, RDNS Diversity Manager.

Vic 2013We also had the opportunity to hear several stimulating and thought provoking papers presented by abstract presenters, Marianne Cullen, Anthony Lewis, Rebecca Mannix and Kate Harper. The close of day one then brought delegates together to enjoy a cocktail party and presentation by a small group of refugee children and young adults from the local Karen Association.

The second day of the Conference provided an overview of lymphoedema and compression management, volunteer experiences and diabetic foot management during our interactive tutorials, followed by a showcase of the fantastic work we see in our community presented by abstract presenters; Marcus Gardner, Matthew Malone and Dr Carolina Weller. Dr Zena Moore challenged the audience to consider the cultural diversity we face and in doing so reminded us that no matter where we live our goal in wound management is a common one.

Vic 2013Day Two culminated in an overview of some of the more unusual wounds we see, presented by Jan Rice, AWMA (VIC) President and the trends in Australia’s population growth and diversity, presented by Charne Miller, Research Fellow, RDNS.

An expert interactive panel closed the day providing some thought provoking cases to discuss as well as some light hearted entertainment. The Conference was officially closed with the support of Mr Paul Rumpff, Director of Nursing Sub Acute Services / Sub Acute Programmes Manager, Bendigo Health and Mr Bill McGuiness, President Australian Wound Management Association and just when you thought it was over, Chinese dragons from the Bendigo Chinese Association burst through the doors to provide a amazing spectacle of dance, colour and sound. What a way to finish!

Contemporary DiningThe AWMA (Vic) state conference sub-committee continues to work tirelessly to bring you an exciting, interesting and educational conference at Bendigo in March 2013. The team are currently working to secure high-profile speakers and a variety of topics. Along with this, the budget, sponsorship, catering and AV hire are all being fine tuned to ensure that the conference is a success outside of the presentations. We are in contact with a number of local Bendigo region providers to ensure that we have a truly ‘Bendigo region’ experience. This will be in the form of fine food and wine, and there’s even the potential for some dancing (and you can join in too!).

Chinese GardenFor the time being, the sub-committee would recommend that you consider submitting an abstract for inclusion at the conference, in either poster or presentation form. Presentations are to be no longer than 10 minutes. Further information regarding abstract submission will soon be available from this page, so stay tuned!
